At the end of the day, Kris and I said goodbye to the guys and travelled back to London. On the journey home I recalled just how anxious I had felt on the train that morning. I remembered the look Paul had given me after handing me back my marmalade. Those eyes that said, “Of course I’m not ignoring you, silly. I know you’re there”. How my anxiety had dissipated almost immediately after that.

I replayed my conversation with him over in my head. Why had I been so mean to him? He misunderstood; when I questioned his principles, I was not accusing him of trying to cheat on Eloise with me.

He sulked for the rest of the day and would not talk to me after that. It was becoming a regular pattern. Whenever we came into contact with each other we would start out fine - with seemingly good intentions. Then one of us would bait the other and it always ended badly.

Now the anxiety was back. All I wanted to do was apologise and make things right again, when what I needed to do was follow Mom’s advice and stay the hell away from him.
